After years (years!) of anticipation, world’s largest tin bird (the Airbus A380) ever lands in Sydney, ending its first genuine passenger flight. (Well, sort of - seats on board were auctioned off on this and the return flight tomorrow.)

Singapore is the first airline to take delivery of one of the must-have new toys; low clouds and wetness dampened the triumphant entry, passengers too busy oohing about the vast interior of the plane (and, if they really ponied up, the double bed first class suites) to notice much of anything in regards to weather.

Wow, there’s a huge 20,000 square mile, 37 county region in Northeast Iowa that’s designated as a National Heritage Area. Smokestacks and Silos celebrates Iowa’s role in making America mighty through agriculture.

Nearly a hundred historic and culture sites and make up the places to go and things to see in this region and there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.  Included are one room schoolhouses, living history farms, homes, blacksmith shops, parks, ranches, farms, art galleries, wineries and interpretive centers.

There are plenty of unusual museums which celebrate the area, including those for Laura Ingall Wildes, the Mississippi River (including an aquarium), Masons, African Americans, Farms and Agricultural Equipment, Tractors, Toys and The Putnam Museum in Davenport, which joins the old and new with an IMAX Theater.

Escape the Cold - Run away to Destin, FL

As the northern part of the country slides into the colder weather you may be thinking, “I’m not ready for this yet.”  I admit, I think that too almost daily - in spite of the mild weather Colorado has been experiencing so far this fall.  So what can you do to give those flip flops in the bottom of your closet special attention?  Plan a winter trip to Destin, Florida.

Bali is a small island although first time visitors are often surprised at how big it is and how long it takes to get from A to B. Ubud is 12 nautical miles from Kuta, but if you can get there in under an hour you’re doing well.

Traffic starts up in the Kuta / Seminyak area around 6.30am, weekdays being super busy. Leading up to 5pm traffic will increase and stay busy for over an hour. When exploring Bali with Kuta / Seminyak as your starting point, expect heavy traffic for the first hour of your trip and also the last hour, if you are returning the same day. Sunday is the quietest day for traffic in Bali as many people have the day off and spend it with family.

I have been quiet for the last couple of weeks. The plan was to have a couple of weekends away, get out of London and relax. After spending so much time away last year shooting Unforgettable Islands to Escape to Before You Die (where I flew the equivalent of 7.5 times around the world) I have been taking things a lot easier this year. I guess I had forgotten just how stressful leaving home can be.

First weekend away, driving down to Bristol to see my parents. Less than 150 miles, motorways most of the way. We left on a quiet day, sailed out of London without seeing a traffic jam or a red traffic light. Things seemed to be going well until with just twenty miles to go the engine blew up. Ever seen a Formula 1 race when an engine blows? That was what it looked like. Clouds of smoke, no gear box, cruising in to the hard shoulder. Waiting with a baby at the side of the motorway for a tow truck!

Bali Travel TV Programs To Go

If you can’t be in Bali, what’s the next best option? Well, for some, it’s watching travel TV shows about Bali so they can keep reminding themselves of how beautiful Bali is. Thanks to a new project launched by the folks behind the fantastic Globe Trekker travel TV programs, you can not only watch travel shows about Bali but you can do it on your own schedule, whenever you want.

With GlobeTrekkerChannel you can choose from more than 350 hours of programming, including an “adventure golf” show about Bali! There are also plenty of other destinations to keep you interested, too, including something from every continent on earth. With this new system, instead of waiting until a program airs on TV you can download just the one you want to your computer and then watch it whenever you like - which seems like the ideal way to stave off boredom on a long flight! Once you’ve downloaded a show you have a full week to watch it. And each month you’ll get a free half-hour video with snippets of some of the programs available for download.
