Genoa, Italy - The Romantik Hotel Villa Pagoda

The Romantik Hotel Villa Pagoda is located in Nervi, Italy just outside of Genoa. The hotel is in a renovated 200 year old villa. I lived in Nervi as a child and was eager to stay there on one of my trips to Italy. There are not many hotels located in Nervi so I was excited when I found the Hotel Villa Pagoda.

I recently stayed there with two other friends. We rented a small suite with 2 single beds and a small sitting area that had a day bed. We also had a large bathroom that was clean and well-stocked with toiletries. The shower was comfortable but not as large as you would find in hotels in the US.

Sunday was a really great day. Well, it was, until one of my flatmates woke me up from my extremely deep and relaxing slumber. He reminded me that this was the last day to go to the museums for free. Free is a magic word so I listened very carefully after that. Yes we were going to go to Villa Borghese today. Finally, I thought after having been here for 8 months I would finally see it. So we got the metro at Vittorio Emanuele. Then we got off at Barberini and then got a bus from Via Veneto. This however turned out to be a rather round about way of doing things. Bus 910 from Termini stops right outside the park, steps away from the museum.

I have been hearing that phrase quite a lot lately and I am really not surprised. The weather for the last few days has been absolutely fantastic but it has also been devilishly hot. The past few days have been around 31.5 degrees. Thats just a bit lower than the record for Rome a couple of years ago at 32 and a bit degrees.

If this is what its like now in spring i dont know how its going to be in summer. Anyway a few tips on how to survive the heat in Rome for the time you are here. The first and most important thing to remember is to drink plenty of water. Thats no problem in Rome because there are loads of fountains in the streets and the piazzas.

Rain has finally arrived in northern Italy providing a little relief in an early season drought. The drought has caused the average water level of the PO River (Italy’s longest river) to drop 25 feet. The PO flows across northern Italy and is crucial to area farms. The river has been affected by drought several times over the past few years but never this early in the season.

The Italian government on Friday announced emergency action despite rain across the affected central and northern regions. Experts warned that despite Thursday’s torrential rain which is forecast to continue for the next sevearl days, the Po was still much too low for this time of the year.

It is hard to find a bad meal in Italy. In a country where eating is an art form it pays to take a minute and learn about the different types of restaurants you will find on your next trip.

•Autogrill (OWtogreel) - These are the markets and restaurants that are found in the rest areas off the expressways. Don’t be fooled, I have bought some of my best meals in the Autogrill’s. The larger Autogrill’s have food that you can buy to take on a picnic.

•Bar (bar) - Bars are on every street corner in Italy. Coffee and a wide variety of other drinks are served in bars. In most bars you go to the cashier first and place your order, then you take your ticket to the counter and order what you paid for.

Is there a Leonardo Da Vinci painting hiding behind a wall in Florence, Italy’s town hall? One of the art world’s great mysteries may soon be solved.

Italy’s culture minister, Francesco Rutelli, has given his approval to look at what lies behind an existing painting at the Palazzo Vecchio. After a meeting with the mayor of Florence, Rutelli said “We’ve decided to give the go-ahead to explore the Salone del Cinquecento to look for the Battle of Anghiari.”

Researchers believe an unfinished mural by Leonardo Da Vinci titled the “Battle of Anghiari” may be hidden in the cavity of a wall concealed by another mural. Art researcher, Maurizio Seracini, first noticed the cryptic message “Cerca, Trova” which translates to “seek and you shall find” in one of the frescoes decorating a wall in the Palazzo Vecchio almost 30 years ago.
