I’m up near Dallas tonight, ready to hop out of my hotel bed tomorrow and start working the finishing touches on a Texas drag racing story that I’m writing for Texas Highways magazine.

Ski season is upon us and Northstar-At-Tahoe is gearing up for a stellar year for the snowbound. Let’s take a look at some of the updates the ski resort is implementing this year.

ON-MOUNTAIN IMPROVEMENTS
Northstar Resort’s snowmaking system will again see improvements, allowing the resort to have even more terrain available to guests in the early season. The resort will be able to cover more acreage with snowmaking, and will upgrade the system on Village Run, the trail that provides guests with direct access from mid-mountain to the Village at Northstar. In addition, the refill rate will be improved, allowing the snowmaking system to pump more water at a faster, more efficient rate.

Kansas City in the past was known for its barbeque and its 200 fountains, perhaps more than any city in the world. But $7 billion in building has made destination-goers take notice of this formerly sleepy Midwestern city.

It may not have the theme parks of Orlando, but the city often referred to as “The Heart of America” is drawing a lot of visitors. There were 16.5 million of them last year.

One major reason: location.

“It is situated within 250 miles of both the population and geographic centers of the United States,” says one travel writer who says it appeals both to business and leisure travelers also because of its affordability.

Mexican tourist destinations in Cancun, the Mayan Riviera, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, as well as those in the state of Yucatan, were left undamaged by hurricane Dean, the ninth most powerful hurricane in history to develop in the Caribbean Sea.

“Fortunately, the tourist infrastructure in the region is in perfect condition and in capacity to continue offering its services to the millions of tourists that visit that area of the country each year,” said Francisco Lopez Mena, Director of the Mexico Tourism Board.

According to Mexican officials, zones affected by the hurricane are functioning with normality, including the famous tourist areas of Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Aventura, Puerto Morelos and Chetumal.

What should have been a boring visit to Clark Field Pampanga, turned into an educational tour of the Nayong Filipino in Clark.

Nayong Filipino at Clark Field, Pampanga

It was an accidental trip to the Nayong Filipino at Clark Expo Center in Pampanga. My family and I were planning to visit a new ranch/farm called Paradise Farm but we couldn’t find it, until we saw a sign pointing to the direction of Nayong Filipino. At first we thought it was already a bygone place. No cars parked outside, no festivities whatsoever. But still we went inside the Nayong Filipino compound and was greeted by a nice looking place with lots of native Filipino houses and a grand old house that reminds us of the Spanish houses owned by famous Filipinos in Cavite, Ilocos and other historic places in the Philippines.

Downtown Scottsdale is a bustling epicenter of activity rich with history and currently undergoing nearly $3 billion of development within the 786-acre area. Two of the most prominent projects – Scottsdale Waterfront and SouthBridge – are nearing completion along the ancient Arizona Canal. The $250 million Scottsdale Waterfront is a 1.1 million-square-foot residential and retail development that is home to culinary delights like P.F. Chang’s, Sauce and Wildfish Seafood Grille as well as eateries like Olive & Ivy Restaurant & Marketplace and Pink Taco. One-of-a-kind boutiques like Estilo Boutique, Mahsa and Twist Boutique also call the Waterfront home along with retailers Isaac Jewelers, Swoozie’s, Borders, Urban Outfitters and Sur la Table. SouthBridge is a $41 million urban development scheduled for completion in January 2008. The future borough is the long-time vision of developer Fred Unger to build a one-of-a-kind community that brings together elite, high-fashion boutiques, independent shops, celebrated cuisine, dynamic cultural festivals and art. When complete, SouthBridge will boast more than 30,000 square feet of retail space and seven planned restaurants, all unique in design and concept with no “chains.” Following are some of the projects that recently opened or scheduled to debut in downtown Scottsdale in the near future:
