I love discovering excellent secondary shopping destinations. What do I mean by this? Whenever I have friends heading toNew York, I tell them to avoid the shops around57th Streetwhere all the tourists go (hello, Bloomingdale???s) and head down to lowerFifth Avenue, which is far less crowded and has better sales. Here inLondonI do my best to avoidOxford Streetat all costs and head to High Street Kensington if I want to hit the high street stores- and keep my sanity. Today I was onMarylebone High Streetwhich reminded me of what an excellent one stop shopping and eating destination it is. After a fab brunch at Providores (try the grilled chorizo and poached egg) I popped into Skandium to browse the Arne Jacobsen chairs as I’m looking for a set, and also managed to do a little Christmas shopping in The White Company, Divertimenti and Brissi- and for a Sunday afternoon, it was barely crowded at all.

La Bomba del Tiempo at Ciudad Cultural Konex

I am still a block away from my destination when the balls of my feet and my belly start to vibrate, but the neighborhood offers no other suggestion as to the nearby hippiefest. Finally, I see a small crowd of dreadlocked, smiling people in brightly woven hats and sweaters, offering delectable whole wheat pan relleno, several smokers, a pretentious student or two, and a man with a small baby strapped across his chest and a gourd in each hand. It is Monday evening in Buenos Aires, and I have arrived at Ciudad Cultural Konex, which hosts a weekly percussion extravaganza called La Bomba de Tiempo.

Kansas City in the past was known for its barbeque and its 200 fountains, perhaps more than any city in the world. But $7 billion in building has made destination-goers take notice of this formerly sleepy Midwestern city.

It may not have the theme parks of Orlando, but the city often referred to as “The Heart of America” is drawing a lot of visitors. There were 16.5 million of them last year.

One major reason: location.

“It is situated within 250 miles of both the population and geographic centers of the United States,” says one travel writer who says it appeals both to business and leisure travelers also because of its affordability.

Mexican tourist destinations in Cancun, the Mayan Riviera, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, as well as those in the state of Yucatan, were left undamaged by hurricane Dean, the ninth most powerful hurricane in history to develop in the Caribbean Sea.

“Fortunately, the tourist infrastructure in the region is in perfect condition and in capacity to continue offering its services to the millions of tourists that visit that area of the country each year,” said Francisco Lopez Mena, Director of the Mexico Tourism Board.

According to Mexican officials, zones affected by the hurricane are functioning with normality, including the famous tourist areas of Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Aventura, Puerto Morelos and Chetumal.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau (GFLCVB) has made the stringent air travel regulations a little more “transparent” for those flying from Fort Lauderdale to Hollywood International Airport. Destination-branded, clear plastic bags – a Federal Aviation Administration must-have for travelers carrying on liquids such as shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream or makeup – are now available free at all security checkpoints throughout the airport.

The bags, bearing Greater Fort Lauderdale’s tourism logo, are designed to hold several three-ounce containers – the maximum container size that can be carried on to planes. Travelers who forgot or misplaced their clear plastic bags during their vacation will be able to keep their toiletries in tact as well as take home a handy, last-minute souvenir from this beach chic destination. The GFLCVB is making available approximately one million of these branded bags, encouraging travelers to fly now while supplies last.

“Maui No Ka Oi”, translates quite simply to Maui is the Best! And if you’ve ever traveled to the Hawaiian Islands, you know exactly why this catch phrase is so popular- because Maui, also known as the “Magic Isle”, is filled to the brim with art, culture, and enough history to sink a whaling boat.

The island of Maui is the second most popular tourist destination in this south pacific island chain. Nearly 120,000 people call this 727 sq. mile isle their home, while pineapple and sugarcane are still their key exports. 2.5 million visitors each year travel to the golden-white sand beaches, mile-high mountain peaks and scores of breathtaking, natural waterfalls, all creating an ideal backdrop to the most relaxing vacation of your life.
