Vivez l'ete!

“No cord or cable can so forcibly draw, or hold so fast, as love can do with a twined thread.” - Robert Burton, 1577-1640; photo, spools of thread from a 1920s French sewing cabinet.

The mystery man

Thanks to all the readers who tried to guess the identity of the mystery man. Alas, the answers are incorrect. When I saw that handsome man walking down the street towards me, my first thought was “Brad Pitt!” This was certainly possible, as Brad and his partner Angelina Jolie have been in France recently; some time ago I saw Angelina walking in the same area. Then I decided he was too short to be Pitt, but he looked very familiar. So I turned my camera towards the window, to get his photo in the reflection, as he walked past. I think he’s a French rugby player, but don’t know his name. The Rugby World Cup begins next month in Paris, so perhaps I’ll discover his identity then. Thanks for playing along.

Hawaii by Submarine, and the Kids Loved It

Yes dad, it’s a real submarine

OK - so I’m heading to Waikiki and Oahu with my family (two boys - 8 and 6) and my lovely wife. What to do? Of course we planned on spending time on the beach, heading to the north shore (no waves in June… doh!) and enjoying the multitude of shops and restaurants. But we needed some adventure!

So browsing the Viator products for Honolulu I stumbled upon the Atlantis Submarine. Interesting… I wrongly assumed that Submarines were limited to Paul Allen and the world’s major navies. I decide to give it a go.

So you’ve been following the Northern Territory (NT) motto for a while now — Not Today, Not Tomorrow, Not Tuesday, Not Thursday. You’re kicking back with some second-rate Australian beers (Fosters anyone?) or expensive imported stuff underneath the palm tree of your choice, and now you reckon the day has arrived to leave Australia

No, we aren???t talking about fighting the crowds on Oxford Street or suffering a heart attack because the last Roberto Cavalli dress for H&M was just snapped up. ShopFatal.com is a brand new- if oddly named- website selling clothing from hard to find designers (they’re hard to find if you don’t live in a big city, or just don’t want to deal with the holiday crowds). Scroll through the website and you???ll find Vivienne Westwood???s Anglomania dresses which can be rolled up and worn as shirts (pictured) as well as Jovovich-Hawk dresses and Tata-Naka shoes. We also like the colourful, graphic hoodies from C. Neeon. ShopFatal.com ships within the US and internationally, so start clicking.

I know it???s a little early to shut down for Thanksgiving but we???re packing our bags and high-tailing it out ofLondonto head home for the holidays. This means no computers and no blogging until next week- but lots of shopping and eating until then. Just like last year we???re going to brave ???Black Friday??? to hit the stores- which have nothing on anOxford Streetcrowd- and can???t wait to tuck into our family???s super yummy roasted chestnut and porcini mushroom soup (the secret to why it tastes so good? Add a splash of cognac and lots of cream??¦ or maybe it???s the other way around). And if we???re feeling inspired, we might even make these cookies we spotted on the Pillsbury site. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
