Traveling with the family can afford some of the most memorable vacations for years to come. With proper planning and research, you can ensure that your family vacation pleases even the pickiest member of the family. But with so many choices available, how does one choose the perfect destination? Budget, location, activities and amenities are all factors that help determine a location the whole family will enjoy. The following five travel tips will get even the most inexperienced travelers on the road to their ideal summer vacation in 2006.
Plan ahead. Accommodations can be sold out or unavailable by early summer. The Travel Industry Association of America, who conducted an online survey of 1,519 U.S. adults aged 18 and over in January 2006, reports that 21 percent of Americans who are planning to travel this summer had already arranged lodging at their destination. The rest were either exploring their options for where to stay (28 percent) or had not yet selected the specific destination for their trip (32 percent). The age of the internet makes research and booking easy and fairly painless. Chamber of Commerce websites make finding destination activities and outings simple. Getting the whole family excited about your trip can be as easy as spending 20 minutes around the computer looking at websites that bring the destination right into your home.
Did you see this Eurostar commercial yet? Enough to make train nerds (and preservationists) cry. (Yes, the station really looks that hot.)
Well, it happened. Today, London came closer to Paris, and the United Kingdom got its first proper high-speed rail line, linking the renovated St. Pancras station to Gare du Nord in just 2 hours and 15 minutes, a savings of a little more than 20 minutes. Train nerds know that it takes a lot of work to eliminate a chunk of time like that from an itinerary. Well, safely anyway.
The Romantik Hotel Villa Pagoda is located in Nervi, Italy just outside of Genoa. The hotel is in a renovated 200 year old villa. I lived in Nervi as a child and was eager to stay there on one of my trips to Italy. There are not many hotels located in Nervi so I was excited when I found the Hotel Villa Pagoda.
I recently stayed there with two other friends. We rented a small suite with 2 single beds and a small sitting area that had a day bed. We also had a large bathroom that was clean and well-stocked with toiletries. The shower was comfortable but not as large as you would find in hotels in the US.
In most Italian cities, cats roam at will, foraging and begging for food, making their presence known in alleyways, on church steps, and even hanging around famous monuments.
This, for example, is the view from our hotel window in Naples a few years ago. These kitties showed up the minute we opened the shutters, and kept up a three-day chorus of meows and purrs until at last we tossed some tuna out the window.
The area next to the Navarre Pyrenees has a special charm, thanks to the natural treasures it has hidden since time immemorial. The last Iberian glaciers, deep canyons, extensive areas of forest where species in danger of extinction such as the brown bear or the bearded vulture are some of the wonders travellers can contemplate. The inhabitants of this area still conserve their ancestors? deep-rooted traditions of the mountains, owing to the isolation of these valleys during centuries and the hotel offer ranges from magical ?paradores? (State-run hotels housed in historic buildings) to large tourist complexes. Read the rest of this entry »

“Manuel works for 30 years without stopping. He brings up his children, sets a good example and devotes all his time to work, never asking: ‘Does what I’m doing have any meaning?’ His one thought is that the busier he is, the more important he will be in the eyes of the world.
“His children grow up and leave home. He gets a promotion at work. One day, he receives a watch or a pen, as a reward for all those years of devotion. His friends shed a few tears and the longed-for moment arrives: he’s retired, free to do whatever he wants!
PlanetFone came through for me once again. I recently visited Italy with two friends. Because there were three of us traveling together we rented hotel suites and apartments.
I decided to rent a phone from PlanetFone because of my experience with them when my sister had her purse stolen in Termini Train Station in Rome. My traveling companions agreed it was a good idea. One has a parent who is quite ill and she wanted a phone number where she could be contacted in case of an emergency.
