We decided to go to the Genesis concert for two reasons. The first, it was free. The second is our friend Skye is a huge fan. There was estimated to be about a half of a million people going to this concert in Circo Massimo, and boy did it seem like it!
Surprisingly for an event this BIG it was really organized. The traffic wasn’t horrible, we found parking easily and when we left it was smooth sailing as well. There were some negatives though. For one, Circo Massimo is a huge dust bowl. With half a million fans, a lot of dust was kicked up- when we got home we were full of dirt, in our eyes, ears and noses. Also because of the dirt you couldn’t sit down and Genesis didn’t skimp because this was a free concert. Some of the songs went on for seriously 15 minutes! I think the whole show was pushing 3 hours long. There also wasn’t any food booths, and of course I didn’t plan ahead and bring snacks. It got to the point where I was beginning to think Phil Collins himself was preventing me from having a sandwich (at my favorite sandwich shop Orfeo, I have a post coming up on it). There was also a gang of bums, who probably lived in Circo Massimo, and didn’t mind thousands of people bearing witness to them peeing when they felt the urge.
I have to give credit to Phil Collins for being 60 something and still rocking out and having an amazing voice. We didn’t stay for the encore, and even Skye the number 1 fan began to break at the thought of food. Definitely a fun night!
If you are in Rome during the summer months be on the lookout for the free concert. They began doing this a few years ago and even had performers like Simon and Garfunkel, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Bryan Adams and Billy Joel. The website is Progetto Italia. See you next year!
